Event Staff

Under the direction of the Guest Services and Rental Coordinator the Event Staff is responsible for assisting with the implementation of scheduled events at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens. Working with the Yew Dell Botanical Gardens team the Event Staff will follow up and coordinate with wedding parties, event rentals and Yew Dell programs and events. The Event Staff is part of a team providing an outstanding experience to our guests.

  • Act as the primary contact during an event rental and Yew Dell sponsored events through the event set up and break down, coordinating with other staff as needed
  • Open and close buildings and gates for event set up and break down
  • Oversee event set up, deliveries, vendor management and break down
  • Check facilities prior to the event to assure correct set up and cleanliness
  • Check facilities during and after the event to assure cleanliness and completion of the storage of event materials
  • Adjust set ups in buildings and on the grounds as needed
  • Keep grounds and facilities clean and stocked
  • Make suggestions to increase customer satisfaction while maintaining Yew Dell’s policies
  • Be present during rental set up when needed and at Yew Dell events when appropriate
  • Guest services including café and bar service
  • Ensure that all event policies are followed
  • Recommend improvements and changes to events
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Associates Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Event Coordination and or Bar experience a plus
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and the willingness to “roll up sleeves” to get the job done
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work in an organized and efficient manner
  • Detail oriented with commitment to accuracy
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel
  • Commitment to furthering the goals of Yew Dell Botanical Gardens through creative and energetic support of the institution
  • A positive attitude with staff, volunteers, and visitors
  • Weekend and evening hours required

Grounds Maintenance Technician

The Grounds Maintenance Technician will perform and coordinate the maintenance of Yew Dell’s grounds and equipment to keep them in top working order to ensure a safe and efficient environment for staff and visitors. The Grounds Maintenance Technician will interact daily with the Horticulture and Facilities team while also working and collaborating with all other departments. The Grounds Maintenance Technician will also engage with volunteers and the public to support the institution’s guiding mission of sparking a passion for plants and gardening through accessible science and inspiring beauty.

  • Create and implement a comprehensive maintenance schedule for all power equipment and vehicles
  • Schedule and manage contracted equipment service
  • Solicit bids from and manage contractors for major repairs
  • Maintain exterior hardscape features including parking lots, pathways, retaining walls, fences, gates and garden lighting
  • Operate riding/push mowers and trimmers as necessary
  • Maintain Yew Dell’s natural area’s trails, bridges, ponds and spillways
  • Collaborate with Building Maintenance Technician on projects as needed
  • Provide trash collection and manage contracted service
  • Operate power equipment as needed including power washers, tractors, forklift, etc.
  • Organize and maintain the maintenance shop in a safe and efficient order in partnership with the Building Maintenance Technician
  • Train, supervise and work with volunteers and lead volunteer workdays
  • Assist with Yew Dell community programs and events
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Previous experience in grounds and equipment maintenance or related field
  • Familiarity and experience in operation and maintenance of power equipment from tractors to mowers and small power equipment
  • Familiarity and experience with basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical and other facilities systems
  • Familiarity and experience with basic building cleaning materials and supplies
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with other staff, volunteers and visitors
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Kentucky pesticide applicator’s license
  • Ability to be on a ladder, lift up to 50 pounds, and be on foot for long periods of time
  • Must be willing to work rotating-seasonal and non-standard hours as needed
  • Must have daily transportation and ability to attend meetings and various functions as required

Grower Assistant

The Grower Assistant works under the guidance of the Nursery and Greenhouse Manager to produce, maintain, display and sell plants. The Grower Assistant will interact daily with the Horticulture and Facilities team while also working and collaborating with all other departments. The Grower Assistant will also engage with volunteers and the public to support the institution’s guiding mission of sparking a passion for plants and gardening through accessible science and inspiring beauty.

  • Under direction of the Nursery and Greenhouse Manager, water, fertilize, weed and organize plants in the nursery as needed
  • Propagate plants by seed, cutting and root division while monitoring nursery plants for pest/disease problems
  • Assist with upkeep and repair of nursery and greenhouse facilities and equipment
  • Care for sale plants located at the Yew Dell Visitor Center including inventory, watering, presentation and rotating inventory
  • Provide garden tours, lectures, classes and workshops
  • Use of computer software for online plant sale tasks
  • Assist in the implementation of sustainable pest control measures
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities
  • Field horticulture questions and inquiries from the public
  • Train, supervise and work with volunteers and lead volunteer workdays
  • Assist with Yew Dell community programs and events
  • Other duties as assigned
  • At least two years of experience in greenhouse production or related field
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of power equipment and vehicles such as rotary tillers, backpack blowers, front end loaders, golf carts and manual transmission utility vehicles
  • Familiarity with basic nursery equipment including fertilizer injectors, sprayers and power equipment
  • Familiarity with basic landscape and garden plant identification and cultivation requirements
  • Openness to and enthusiasm for learning new techniques, products, and approaches
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Kentucky pesticide applicator license
  • Must be willing to work rotating-seasonal and non-standard hours as needed
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other staff and volunteers and a willingness to assist others in the service of Yew Dell’s mission
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and be on foot for long periods of time
  • Must have daily transportation and ability to attend meetings and various functions as required
