What to Expect as a Volunteer

What to Bring:

  • Close-toed shoes (required)
  • Gardening gloves (recommended, though we have some that may contain Latex available for use)
  • Favorite hand tools (optional)
  • If you have a volunteer shirt or personal Yew Dell badge, please wear at least one of these.
  • Water bottle (strongly recommended) The horticulture center sink and water bottle refill station near the restrooms are available for refilling bottles.
  • Misc: Snack,  sunscreen, hat, bug spray, etc.

Arriving:

  • Please park in the front lot and enter through the Visitor Center (red barn).
  • If the Visitor Center is not open, please enter through the black gates to the left of the barn.
    • (NOTE: this is the only time to use this entrance; if the gate is locked, wait for staff to unlock it)
  • From there, head to the Preston T. Ormsby Horticulture Center (map and video below)

Group Volunteers

  • Staff will meet you in at the Visitor Center (red barn).
  • Please be sure you’ve communicated with your group leader and have completed any required forms in advance to expedite the sign in process.
  • Please plan to arrive a few minutes early so your  group may start its volunteer project in a timely manner.
  • A group photo will be taken upon your arrival and shared afterwards with your group leader.
