# Yew Dell Botanical Gardens ## Posts - [Why is my hydrangea not blooming this year?](https://yewdellgardens.org/2025/12/17/why-is-my-hydrangea-not-blooming-this-year/): If you gathered in one large room, all the plant pros from all over the world and asked them to name the number 1 question they are asked by their customers, that normally diverse and typically quite contrarian group would find themselves in unanimous and surprising agreement. Questions related to how to prune a hydrangea, why one either does or does not flower from one year to the next, could fuel a reality TV show . . . maybe even to rival Game of Thrones. Why No Flowers?Improperly Timed Pruning – By far the most common reason for some hydrangeas […] - [How to properly plant a tree.](https://yewdellgardens.org/2025/12/08/how-to-properly-plant-a-tree/): It seems pretty simple. . . Dig a hole. Drop in a tree. Fill the hole. Add water. Go back inside and have another beer. What could go wrong? Yet year after year . . .after decade, we see trees planted incorrectly, dooming them to either a very short life, or, if they actually live through the first year, a medium life of annoyingly poor performance. And, really, there’s no excuse. You see, we’ve been planting trees since the Babylonians hung a few gardens from the top of the Tower of Babel. And not that we have anything on those […] - [These 6 plants signal that yes, spring is already here in Kentucky](https://yewdellgardens.org/2025/03/04/spring-is-here/): Winter, schminter. I know we were punched in the nose with the Christmas blast from the North, but as far as I’m concerned, it feels like spring outside! - [February is “Go Time!” in the Nursery](https://yewdellgardens.org/2025/02/18/february-is-go-time/): We’ve been working to bust the concept of a “slow winter” by unveiling all the work our team does during the winter months. - [Winter Care in the Nursery](https://yewdellgardens.org/2025/01/20/winter-care-in-the-nursery/): One may think that the Nursery at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens simply shuts down during the winter; plant sales are offline, little to grow for the gardens, no new plugs incoming to pot up, etc. But the dormant season is a deceptively difficult time for plant care and requires vigilance. Environmental Control Varies How we care for our plants really depends on the environmental controls, or lack of, in each greenhouse. We have two hoop houses that are covered in white plastic with no heating system. The plastic mostly serves to buffer against intense winter winds which can be just […] - [Witch hazel is a necessity in your medicine cabinet: why it should be in your garden, too](https://yewdellgardens.org/2025/01/15/witch-hazel-is-a-necessity/): When I was a kid, my mother’s cure-all for everything from a touch of sunburn to poison ivy and even a mild fever was witchhazel lotion. - [Appreciating the “Ever” in Evergreen](https://yewdellgardens.org/2024/11/01/appreciating-the-ever-in-evergreen/): The color green in a garden is taken for granted during the warm months of the year. Deciduous trees and shrubs abound with their leaves and cast shade over green, herbaceous perennials. Green grass is everywhere you look. Nobody gives it a second thought- it’s green outside! Fast forward to the shorter days of fall when the leaves drop and perennials go dormant, that color green is suddenly much more appreciated. Trees that once blended in with all the green: pines, spruce, arborvitae, and many more have now become the focal points of the garden. The Evergreens of Yew Dell […] - [All Aboard! And with this time of the year, there comes the conversation about fall color. It means so many different things to different people. Some might simply think that it is changing the wardrobe color from bright summer colors to the toned down, earthy tones of their favorite flannel shirt. Others think of the majestic, pure yellow forests found this time of the year in northern forests.  Here in Kentucky and the rest of the eastern hardwood […] - [Hardy Garden Mums: An Underutilized Perennial for the Landscape](https://yewdellgardens.org/2024/10/14/hardy-garden-mums/): Long-time friends of Yew Dell might be familiar with our staff’s focus on Hardy Garden Chrysanthemums... - [Why you’ll want to plant in the fall](https://yewdellgardens.org/2024/09/18/plant-in-fall/): For well over a decade now, I have been immersed in the field of horticulture. From studying plants during my academic career, working in the industry, or growing and caring for plants in my own time. In this span, I have always felt like all the excitement and all the anticipatory energy towards planting is devoted only to springtime. We need to break this narrative and give early autumn the credit it deserves for planting perennials! What’s so special about fall? Newly-planted perennials There are some clear exceptions to fall planting. Annuals for pops of color in the garden obviously […] - [Blooms to Enjoy in the Fall](https://yewdellgardens.org/2024/08/29/fall-blooms/): Fall is near We have made it to September! Those of us who love the change of seasons have been thinking about the coming of fall for quite some time and it officially starts this month. Here at Yew Dell, things in the gardens are starting to show signs of the end of the growing season. The annuals from spring are huge and many of the spring and early-blooming perennials are becoming ugly and brown, and some are already dormant! But there is still another round of garden beauty just starting to show up. Our fall-blooming perennials are just starting […] - [Kitchen Garden](https://yewdellgardens.org/2024/08/19/kitchen-garden/): This year we have embarked on many wonderful transformations at Yew Dell. Some of these changes include the major renovation of the Castle Gardens area, adding to the horticulture team, and updating different locations throughout the gardens. One area that had a complete makeover was the Log Cabin garden bed, which is the new home of the Kitchen Garden. Staff working on creating new paths around the Log Cabin. Relocation & Planting The Kitchen Garden, which was formerly located near the Castle, moved to the Log Cabin in early spring of 2024; and it took a lot of effort to […] - [Understanding Insect Host-Plants as part of Ecological Gardening](https://yewdellgardens.org/2024/08/16/understanding-host-plants/): More than Monarchs Monarch caterpillar I originally became interested in the topic of host plant and pollinator relationships from the same concerning headline that has motivated much of the general public; that is, the Monarch Butterfly’s fluctuating conservation status as either Threatened or, at times, Endangered. Though the call-to-arms for ecological gardening has been greatly aided by the public’s attention to this single species, I feel we can get hyper-fixated on saving only the most eye-catching species or those that have a compelling story behind them. The Xerces Society, a conservation organization that focuses largely on insects, notes that 29 […] - [Why pollinator plants are important for every kind of garden](https://yewdellgardens.org/2024/07/15/pollinator-plants/): It’s July and the spring garden is well in the rearview mirror. The summer-blooming perennials are coming on strong and so are all of the insects that call our gardens home. The word “pollinator” has become a huge, HUGE buzz word in the gardening world. Literally and figuratively, “pollinator” is a buzz word! These are plants at Yew Dell that have so many insects visiting them that you can hear the buzz. Flies, butterflies, moths, wasps, bees, beetles, and bugs galore feed on the pollen and nectar of our garden plants during this time of year. I’ve said for a […] - [Hydrangeas at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens](https://yewdellgardens.org/2024/07/02/hydrangeas/): Hydrangeas! Indeed, historical records indicate that they’ve been cultivated in Asian gardens for more than 2000 years and came to North American gardens in the 19th century. There are few plants that say “garden” more than spring peonies. But a peony is not necessarily a peony is not necessarily a peony. With more than 40 species spread across native ranges in western North America, Asia and Europe, there’s a whole lot of diversity to be found in the genus Paeonia. At Yew Dell Botanical Gardens you’ll find four different groups of peonies. And whether […] - [The Basics on Growing Tomatoes](https://yewdellgardens.org/2024/02/19/tomato-basics/): Whether you consider yourself a tomato connoisseur or just a fan, there’s nothing better than picking that first one of the season off the vine.. - [Features of the Newest Greenhouse](https://yewdellgardens.org/2024/01/15/feastures-newest-greenhouse/): It’s cold, blistery days like this that seem like a perfect time to talk about greenhouses. - [What's the difference between yams and sweet potatoes? 3 things to know](https://yewdellgardens.org/2023/11/17/yams-vs-sweet-potatoes/): One of those annual Thanksgiving debates typically revolves around the correct terminology for the venerable sweet potato… or is it a yam? - [Here are 3 ways to overwinter your tropical plants for next summer](https://yewdellgardens.org/2023/11/10/overwinter-tropical-plants/): Give a bunch of gardeners a plant with white flowers and they’ll all want the pink variant… - [Is composting really worth it? If you know me, you certainly know I’m not fancy or sophisticated . . . or even boujee, but that shade cloth sure works great! So this year we’re testing out a large collection of Species Tulips. In contrast to the common hybrids with their gigantic flowers and short life spans (we use most hybrid tulips as annual crops) the species tulips tend to be smaller and not quite as bold in bloom, but they are much better over the long haul – most come back year after year.Garden StatsLife Cycle: Perennials Height: […] - [QR Big Bloom Tour GT Planters](https://yewdellgardens.org/tours/self-guided-tours/qr-big-bloom-tour-gt-planters/): QR Big Bloom Tour Glasshouse Terrace Planters About this PlantingThese large, aged steel planters are a lot of fun to design, their varying heights challenge our horticulture staff to get creative with the selections. As you walk, you will see extensive collections including dogwood, redbud, beech, holly, magnolia and many more. Holly was one of Klein’s favorite plant groups – at one time his collection numbered more than 200 varieties. The Arboretum plantings were started in the late 1960s as row crop production was phased out. One of the benefits of the arboretum is the ability to see mature specimens of some trees that are still considered relatively […] - [QR Architecture Tour-Log Cabin](https://yewdellgardens.org/log-cabin/): Log Cabin Yew Dell Architecture Tour Theodore Klein moved this 1840s log cabin to the Yew Dell property from nearby Brownsboro in the 1970s to serve as housing for several nursery workers. The log cabin was fully rehabilitated and upgraded in 2016 with support from the Oldham County Community Foundation.  - [QR Architecture Tour-Corn Crib](https://yewdellgardens.org/corn-crib/): Corn Crib Yew Dell Architecture Tour This small concrete block building was used as a place to store grain for the Klein farm livestock. At times it was also used as a milking shed. The holes in the concrete sides of the building allowed for air circulation for grain storage. In front of the corn crib is the pet cemetery. This serves as a resting place for Klein family pets. The carved cat head stone is a memorial to Persimmon, our first Yew Dell Botanical Gardens garden cat. Klein carved the headstones, beginning his interest in stone carving which is seen all around the […] - [QR Architecture Tour-Nurseries](https://yewdellgardens.org/nurseries/): Research & Production Nurseries Yew Dell Architecture Tour Yew Dell’s nurseries provide space to propagate and grow all the plants for garden displays, research studies, plant sales, and training workshops. The nurseries contain plants collected from all across Kentucky and all around the globe, so you are likely to see plants that you’ve never seen before. Plants in the nurseries are evaluated for ornamental traits and sustainability to help us identify the best plants for local gardens. You are welcome to wander the nurseries but please pay close attention to signs and avoid walking in restricted areas. Some of our research projects are quite sensitive. […] - [QR Architecture Tour-Holly Allee](https://yewdellgardens.org/holly-allee/): Holly Allee Yew Dell Architecture Tour The Holly Allee consists of two rows of ‘Klein No 1’ American Holly that Theodore trained into an evergreen tunnel. He trained the trunks to grow along lengths of bent re-bar, giving the trunks the shape you can see today. The event lawn next to the Allee originally contained the shade house used to protect newly propagated cuttings and seedlings for the nursery. The lawn is now used for weddings and events, an important revenue source for Yew Dell. - [QR Architecture Tour-Secret Garden](https://yewdellgardens.org/secret-garden/): Jean Ohlmann Secret Garden Yew Dell Architecture Tour The Secret Garden was built for testing and display of everything from dwarf conifers to peonies. Originally designed as a sun garden, it has developed into a shade garden and now holds a large and varied collection of shade plants with interest throughout the year. Through the hard work and generosity of the Louisville Rambler Garden Club and support from the Principal Financial Group, this garden has experienced a rebirth. It contains more than 70 winter and spring-blooming varieties of lenten rose, hardy ferns, hardy ginger and many other shade specialties. - [QR Architecture Tour-Millstone](https://yewdellgardens.org/millstone/): Millstone Garden Yew Dell Architecture Tour This shady garden offers a wide range of unusual plants from all over the world. The large white pineat the center of the garden is one of the few plants on the property that was here when Theodore and Martha Lee Klein bought the property in the early 1940s. The garden also features part of Klein’s millstone collection. He searched for and salvaged millstones from across the state. He even found a millstone that ground the grain that Abraham Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks, used to make bread. He incorporated some of these millstones into his property and donated […] - [QR Architecture Tour-Walled Garden](https://yewdellgardens.org/walled-garden/): Walled Garden Yew Dell Architecture Tour The walled garden was designed by Klein to be viewed as part of the house – an outside room. This traditional walled garden space is used as all of Yew Dell’s gardens are used – to evaluate new plant varieties for their performance in the local climate. Our goal is to test plants from across the globe and recommend the best performing and most sustainable plants for use in the local region. The pump house in the corner of the garden served as the distribution point for spring water that was pumped up from the woods below the Castle. This garden […] - [QR Architecture Tour-Rock House](https://yewdellgardens.org/rock-house/): Rock House Yew Dell Architecture Tour This stone-faced building was originally used as a loading dock for the Klein Nursery operation and was constructed in 1952. It was used to hold and prepare deliveries in and out of the nursery. Complete with a fish-scale slate roof, embedded millstone and a hand-carved corner stone, it is an excellent example of Theodore’s craftsmanship. - [QR Architecture Tour-Green Roof](https://yewdellgardens.org/green-roof/): Green Roof Yew Dell Architecture Tour The north roof slope of the greenhouse is covered with a green roof system with more than 30 types of plants. The growing mix is a 6” deep layer of sharp gravel to provide excellent drainage. Green roof systems like this are extremely durable, reduce storm water runoff and reduce reflected heat. The green roof was only irrigated several times during the first year of establishment. The drought tolerant sedums and other succulent plants are perfectly at home in this very dry setting. - [QR Architecture Tour-Klein Home](https://yewdellgardens.org/klein-home/): Klein Home Yew Dell Architecture Tour Theodore and Martha Lee Klein purchased the Yew Dell property in 1941. He designed and built the family home between 1947 and 1949. Theodore crafted all of the interior woodwork. He also salvaged floors from the old Confederate Soldiers Home in Pewee Valley to be used in some areas of the house. He shipped in stone from Michigan for the building façade and salvaged a colored glass window inset next to the garage door. The house now serves as Yew Dell’s primary administrative offices. - [QR Architecture Tour-Greenhouse](https://yewdellgardens.org/greenhouse/): Mary Peabody and Henry Fitzhugh Greenhouse Yew Dell Architecture Tour This groundbreaking facility was built on the footprint of the original Klein nursery greenhouses. It provides space for plant propagation and growing space and serves as an exhibit of low-energy design. The modern facility is powered, heated, and cooled by a super-efficient solar and geothermal system. During the warmer months, this system produces excess energy that is sent back to the public energy grid, lowering our energy cost and reducing strain on the grid. As a Bank Barn, it was constructed on a slope so both the upper and lower levels could be accessed from ground level. The upper level was used for hay storage and the lower contained livestock stalls. In 2005 the barn was renovated with support from the Gheens Foundation and many others. It is now used for lectures, workshops, community and rental events. The Peyton Samuel Head Trust Pavilion was added to the […] - [QR Architecture Tour-Sunken Garden](https://yewdellgardens.org/sunken-garden/): Sunken Garden Yew Dell Architecture Tour The Sunken Garden is the oldest garden on the grounds, originally designed by Theodore Klein and resembling several he built for local customers. It was rehabilitated between 2002 and 2005 through the efforts of volunteers from the Oldham County Master Gardeners and Green Thumbs Garden Club. This garden contains plants that are designed to give the feel of an alpine environment, even though it includes plants from such widely spread climates as the Himalayan Mountains, deserts of southwestern North America, and Central America. In order to give these plants a fighting chance in a Kentucky climate, most […] - [QR Architecture Tour-Overlook Garden](https://yewdellgardens.org/overlook-garden/): Overlook Garden Yew Dell Architecture Tour Designed by noted British plantsman Adrian Bloom, it was installed in a single day in 2005 with more than 3,000 plants donated from nurseries across the country and planted by more than 220 volunteers. This garden combines old stand-by reliable plants and new varieties that are not yet on the market. It is an excellent place to learn about perennials, especially about those that love hot and dry locations. - [QR Architecture Tour-Castle](https://yewdellgardens.org/castle/): Castle Yew Dell Architecture Tour Theodore Klein built the Castle to serve as the family’s pool house. The pool was built into the now grassy terrace in front of the building – complete windows built into the pool sides so his kids could swim underwater and wave at the cows in the field below. He carved the sun dial and other features that adorn the front of the castle. Klein and his daughter also designed the family crest affixed above the window to the right of the entrance.
